SAN JUAN BAUTISTA — November 2, 2026. Visitors often experience Mission San Juan Bautista and the adjoining plaza as one heritage destination. California State Parks explains, however, that the Catholic Church operates the mission while the state manages the surrounding historic park.
Why ownership matters
The mission’s religious operations, admission policies and worship schedule are separate from the state-run historic buildings. The state park manages the Plaza and its structures, whereas the mission has its own institution and rules.
Archaeology and Native history
State archaeologists working with Tribal partners have expanded the evidence about Indigenous life outside the mission walls. The park’s interpretive materials seek to explain the experience of Native people alongside Spanish, Mexican and later American settlement, rather than presenting the mission complex only as architecture.
A respectful visit
People interested in Native history should follow protected-site rules and avoid disturbing artifacts or sensitive areas. Consult each operator separately about tours and access, and distinguish interpretation of the state’s archaeological record from religious activities at the mission.
